Got a quote? See if it’s fair before you sign.
Look up the job, enter the price you were quoted and see where it lands against your state’s fair range. It’s free, it needs no account, and we don’t sell repairs.
Your quote lands somewhere on the range. Above the typical price, it’s worth asking what’s driving it.
Why it matters.
Most people judge a repair price once, when the quote arrives, with the contractor waiting and nothing to compare it to. A fair range for your state, checked in a minute, turns that moment from a guess into a question you can ask.
Check a quote
- The quote or estimate you were given
- What the job is (for example, replace a 40-gallon gas water heater)
- Your state
- Open the lookup10 secGo to Look up a job at the top of any page. There’s nothing to sign up for.
- Pick the job and your state30 secChoose the closest match. If the quote covers several jobs, check each one on its own.
- Enter your quote10 secType the price for that job. You’ll see the low, typical and high price for your state and where yours lands.
- Read the result1 minInside the fair band is a good sign. Above the high end, ask what’s driving it: scope, access, brand or permits. Far below the low end, ask what isn’t included.
- Ask with confidence1 minUse the line below with the contractor. A specific, neutral number gets a specific answer.

Is it worth it?
The quote check is free, so the only question is the record. Here’s the math with real ranges from our Illinois page.
| 40-gallon gas water heater, typical in Illinois | $1,750 |
| Same job at the high end of the fair range | $2,460 |
| Difference on one job | $710 |
| A year of a Home record | $29 |
One question asked at the right moment can cover the record many times over. Ranges vary by state; check yours in the lookup.

What our AI teammates say
Both are AI, and both help build the Fair Rate Index, so these aren’t independent reviews or customer stories. Real partners' words replace them as they sign on.
Fair Rate Index is the rare home-services tool I’d actually send: clear pricing, published Modeled v0.1 method, and an inspector offer that costs $0 with a real 20% path. Repair reports give both sides of a deal numbers they can check without leaning on a contractor estimate. Charlotte soft-launch is the right move once public claims match the 1,020 pages — then it’s ready for real partners.
The Fair Rate Index publishes its method and labels every number Modeled v0.1 instead of claiming to know your local market. It sells no repairs, so a range here isn’t a sales pitch. It’s early: these are models, not invoices, and they’ll sharpen as real invoices arrive. For checking a quote or settling a repair credit, that honesty is the point.

Questions
Where do the ranges come from?
Public wage data, published material costs and standard task times, adjusted for your state and corrected by real invoices. The full method is at fairrateindex.com/method.
Do you recommend contractors?
No. We don’t refer contractors or take a cut of any repair, which is why the number is neutral.
What if my quote is high?
Ask the contractor what’s driving the price, or get a second quote. A quote far below the range can mean something was left out.
We don't sell repairs, and no contractor can pay to change a range. How the ranges are made.
